Votoms is still my favorite mecha series. Serious story, the battles consist of walking tanks shooting and punching each other, the main character isn't self-centered and doesn't talk much, also the story goes at a nice pace, none of typical shonen stuff.

it may sound contrived but if i'm watching a mech anime i want shonen
i want drills
i want flaming fingers

super robot doesn't automatically equal shonen, though. look at Ideon.

also Patlabor master race because it balances comedy and seriousness...by being more comedic.
