Oh man. I watched it when I was a little kid on VHS. I thiiiiiiiiink you can find the original on Netflix. I think. Hell, if the Initial D series on there, that should be too. Make sure you watch the 1980's version. The newer ones are kind of meeehhhhh.. There's also a game called Ken's Rage that takes you through the whole story of the original manga.

First of the North Star is on Hulu and Crunchyroll if you don't mind low-ish quality and commercial breaks.

And even if you don't like Gundam, the 0079 theme is loving legendary.
