I have tried to like em. but pretty much all of them eventually pull out a sword or start some hand to hand combat and I instantly vomit.

I'm not even usually about realism. I love crazy nonsensical stuff. but when you are riding some kinda huge robot, or battlesuit thing, its handicapped looking when they are even within reach of their enemy. and they always are...

Most anime fights (ad arguably the best) have sword fighting and punching in them for no real reason. It's just the way that they're animated.

Mech animes are no exception.

i know thats why they are bad

I don't really favor them either.

But it's because they tend to actually lack action.

The only "mech" anime I could say I've watched beginning to end was Gurren Lagann.

if I spent my nations billions of funds on a super mobile weapon. gathered the most highly qualified people on earth to use them. allowed half the city to be destroyed every time they are used for the sake of overall victory.

I would be pretty pissed if it all meant nothing because the enemy hit it with a 200 foot. sword and took it down.
like maybe we should have invested in a pitfall trap to catch the enemy. might actually work better.

Maybe you wouldn't like Patlabor because a lot of the combat ends up being close-up, but it's more down-to-earth than most mecha shows and it beats all of the others in the comedy department.

dafuq kind of mecha series are you even watching

I watched Code Geass a little bit and Some Gundam series a while back.

Code Geass was clever but the action bits fell flat.

You should probably suggest me some

Code Geass was never really about the mech action, it was about the story first and foremost (though R2 was pretty stuff except for the ending). The mech action is more pronounced in the spinoff OVA, Akito the Exiled. It's all in CG, but it doesn't switch back and forth so it's more consistent. It's not very impressive action, but again, Code Geass is kind of meh with the action.

Gundam SEED is trash through and through (except for the music).
Gundam 00 has some ok action, but the writing is pretty junk for the second season (it has Code Geass syndrome, first season is great and the second isn't).
Gundam Unicorn has really good animation, even when it's CG. It has a bunch of references to older Gundam series (most take place in the same universe, some are in alternate ones) but you don't absolutely require knowledge of them to enjoy it.
Gundam Build Fighters is more of a commercial for the model kits and isn't necessarily mecha because they're not actually piloting them, but the action is well-animated and CG seems to be absent for those scenes.
Not sure how you'd handle old animation, but I do think the older Gundam series are better overall. 0083 Stardust Memory has great animation since it's an OVA with higher production values and it's short, so you might want to check that out.

Patlabor is great, it's comedy and action. It's about a police force that uses mechs. There's a 6-ep OVA and three movies, then a different continuity with a series and a second OVA series (same characters, different events). It's very 80s in terms of animation and style, but that's not a bad thing.

Macross is great, there's plenty of action in that (especially since Ichiro Itano worked on it, and you'll see plenty of the Itano Circus). I think there's three series (I've only really watched the first one) and a number of movies.

One I'd definitely recommend to people who generally don't like mecha is Eureka Seven, there's a lot of focus on the characters and the animation/music are great. There's a sequel that I don't recommend watching, the first series by itself is enough.

its kill la kill

Oh yeah I was planning on watching Eureka 7.

Macross and Patablor sound worth watching.

Macross is kind of campy because it's all 80s-styled (which is why it's so forgetin' good) and in the drafting stages, the first series was supposed to be a parody of Gundam.

But yeah I watched it right after I watched the first Gundam series, got me hooked.

Should I be watching Eureka Seven Astral Ocean or is there another series I have to watch beforehand?

I like old-school from time to time.

Astral Ocean is the completely unnecessary sequel I was talking about. The first series is just Eureka Seven.

Astral Ocean isn't terrible, it's just not very well done and again, not needed at all.

I'm currently watching Black Lagoon, Persona 4, and maybe Log Horizon. Also watching One Piece and Kill la Kill but those are not really priority because I'm caught up on them kinda.

So yeah it may take me a while but I'll probably finish Eureka 7.
