Author Topic: Why is Breakfast called Breakfast?  (Read 1862 times)

Why do we say "brekfist" then?

Not even English people say "Brake fast"!

Because whether we like it or not the english language is a train-wreck. We take a word and then we pronounce it completely wrong, and then it becomes the official pronounciation. Some people say "quepons" when it should be "coupons".

Nobody says quepons. It's not a trainwreck. Learn 2 accent.

I always thought this was fairly obvious, apparently not.

Thats not a "train-wreck" its the evolution of language. I guess the great vowel shift was a trainwreck in your eyes.

just because you don't, doesnt mean no one else does

Because I've totally never looked at the word. It's obvious if you have a 2nd grade education.

Why is it?

Answer:

Breakfast is called Breakfast because in the period you sleep (8-12 hours) you dont eat. And not eating fora prolonged time willingly is called "fasting"
and when your break your fasting, its called Break Fast.

You didn't have to minimize the answer.

It comes from old English.

Fasting is the act of not eating, and you do not eat in your sleep, so technically, you are fasting in your sleep.

You break that fast in the morning.

Hence "Breakfast".

its not like that was in the OP
and then posted a few times after

Because when your in the "OH-I-DONT-WANNA-WAKE-UP-IM-TOO-TIRED" mood, when you finally get up, you BREAK stuff FAST because your either grumpy or too tired.

I figured this out by myself, it's not that complicated :p
Breaking your fasting overnight.
The pronunciation, however, makes no loving sense.

Why is it called breakfast?

BREAK FAST  *no pun intended?*

Apparently I'm the only one that didn't quite know this.

It's not like anyone learned this in first grade or anything amirite
No, you're not.  I've never heard this before now.
