I have no absolutely no idea for how to play Starcraft

If I try attacking, I get raped.
If I try defending, I get raped.

(I only play with CPUs, btw)

I was playing a Protoss vs Terran. I made 12 Zealots and 3 shuttles (4 zealots per shuttle)
I had tons of minerals and what not, and I just decided to go attack. As soon as I got to the Terran base,  I got my shuttles destroyed with missile towers and terran units. That is basically what happens everytime I try to attack. Now, defending. If I try to defend, I spawn units and attack the enemy units, but I still get killed and my base is destroyed. I've never played a full match. I just quit too easily.
How do I play this god-forsaken game? It looks like it can be a lot of fun, but I just don't know how to play it.

I know. I basically suck at all RTS games.

Do stuff fast.
Really fast.
12 Zealots and 3 shuttles isn't alot.
Try like a full-blown army if you so much as want to even hope to survive.
Take down iduvidual defences before attacking larger things.
Use tanky units to forget up those towers, when they are about to die, release your units.

Defending, make sure you have units as well as towers to defend.
Use the right towers that can support each other.

I see they have ammo count things on them, but how do you use them?

I remember when I bought Star Wars: Empire at War Gold and didn't know stuff of how to play (did all of the tutorials too)
then I recently redownloaded it and played it a few days ago and kicked ass

That's not even close enough to a good army.

You need to know what counters what

and what kind of specific build to go for

Or you will be eternally raped

For Protoss

You get cybernetics bay or whatever

Then place it near a pylon

Then wait for stuff to come near

Terran just make engineering bay and then missile turrets

Then they kill stuff for you
