I don't think you have to fill in the name for the friend code to work, it's probably just so you can recognize people better by giving them your own names.
When the other person adds you, their name becomes whatever they have their name set to.
Also what T3Z said, there's already a large 3DS thread in Games. I know you're a little excited that you just got a 3DS but c'mon.
