I was planning on signing up for Steam because I've heard a lot of good things. But I have some questions.
1 - When first signing up, do I have to buy a paid game to verify the account, or can I get a free one?
2 - I've heard I can play Blockland through Steam, is that true?

1- No, you can have the account without owning a game.
2- Yes, you can add other games not on steam that you own to steam.
3- Yes, but I usually don't tell my account name to anyone.

1. You only require games to add friends and more social activity-related things like joining a chatroom.. You can, however, be invited to add someone to the friends list.

2. You don't exactly play Blockland through Steam. You can add Blockland as a non-steam game and once playing it, tells your friends "(playerhere) is now playing Blockland"
