Author Topic: Rant about game graphics (and gamertards in general)  (Read 2191 times)

Not true either, the forget is with you people and your definitive statements.
dude how the hell would you see what you're doing
and yes; you DO have to judge game play because that's what the game is!?
if there was no game play it would be a movie

The elements of game exist as that of a system for which participants make choices and a system responds for that to award them a victory or defeat. The definition of a game usually limits the interactions to exist therein such that like you cant say the act of ordering food at a resturaunt is a game etc, however the elements do not rely on a visual medium. There are many games I know that can be played with only the use of audio, whether it be people speaking, or other such things.

Mass Effect: That game where you skip through cutscenes for literally the entire game.

Please tell me what they are (assuming the games are fun).

I'm talking about games which don't just use audio though. OP mentions COD, let's use that as an example. His friends are just basing it as a good game because of graphics. I said the graphics are important when judging the game, but gameplay is important as well.

Good graphics can really make the game feel better, but it's not something you should hate a game for or put ahead of gameplay.

i prefer aesthetics over graphics

aka: TF2 has cool aesthetics (style) but conservative graphics

COD has cool graphics and absolutely no style at all

I feel as though if a game relies too much on environmental effects and glossy designs over gameplay, it's not worth my time.

Same goes for compelling story. While a compelling story is okay, gameplay and story has to go hand-in-hand and not have stronger points unless the strong point is gameplay. I want to play the game, not watch it.

i prefer gameplay over graphics like OP, but honestly there's no reason for anyone to bash on both sides.. it's a personal choice.

example of my preference: VVVVVV, which has almost no graphical intensity, is a very fun game despite the "old-fashioned" graphics.

Please tell me what they are (assuming the games are fun).
Word games, taboo, where you try to get someone to say something without saying certain words

Others. I am considering trying to develop a 3d dungeon game using only sound with no graphics, but this is a silly far off idea I have thats not on my main todo list

i thought we were talking about video games

VIdeogames arnt the only games.

I'm sorry i don't want to play some stuffty-looking indie game that looks like somebody hired a 10 year old to do the graphic art.
graphics are like texturepacks for minecraft
if they look like stuff I won't use them, they subtract from the overall experience of the game.

Minecraft doesn't have low-quality graphics; in fact the graphics are absolutely beautiful. it has low-quality textures, and it gives some players a feeling of nostalgia, which is part of its claim to success.

I know, but we were talking about video games.
