Author Topic: Deathmatches and the Lack Thereof  (Read 1055 times)

I don't know what happened to nice, simple, old school deathmatches. They were always more skill-oriented than TDMs or anything. On the few occasions that I have hosted deathmatches recently, I have barely gotten any visitors. Where did the deathmatches go?

They fell victim to "SUPR JAHEL AR PEE" and "TDM!!!!! BUSHEEDEEOS WEPNS"

Too true, most likely. However, I am hosting one RIGHT NOW RIGHT NOW RIGHT NOW so if ANYONE wishes to join, it's up.

Oh Satan, oh Satan, the ambiance!

I like good deathmatches.
A good deathmatch for me has to include all of the following:
1) Unique map
2) Decent, balanced weapons
3) A fast-paced gameplay with possibilities for variations.

Most DM-servers fail at 1). 90% of the DM's (excluding those who use the default Afghanistan build) out there have boring maps. Just placing a couple of spawns and red 1x1's with items on them does NOT qualify as a good map. The map needs to be somewhat large, non-duplicated and with a low brickcount. The buildings and terrain must be interesting to look at, but not draw the attention away from the fighting. The default Afghanistan map is a good example, but is overused and should thus be avoided.

There are a couple of good weaponsets, and Bushi's is one of them. What I DON'T like is when people are mixing weapons from different sets together.

3) often goes hand in hand with 1). A nice map doesn't help if it doesn't allow more than 1 way to play. For example: two teams on each side of a bridge. Rushing to the other side might be fun to begin with, but it gets boring after 5 mins or so.

yeah, that's pretty much what happens when i stop playing blockland for long stretches of time
i'll probably host sometime this week, no worries

Oh, I'm hosting as Feral.
Anyway, original build, looks pretty cool, and I'm experimenting with lights a bit.
For balanced weapons, yup, butterfly knife.
Fast paced, Hell yeah. Faster than normal playertype and knives is a sure combination.

I got plenty of people on my DM. The server was almost full most of the time I hosted with around 20 people. Here is a video of it that I found recently after searching my username on YouTube.

I'm posting this from my phone so the link is directed to the mobile YouTube site. If it doesn't work, just search this on YouTube and it is the top one- Wink DM

are you kidding me

knife deathmatches have been done to death, and the butterfly knife is only balanced because it's the ONLY WEAPON YOU CAN USE

plus fast moving playertypes isn't fast-paced, it's just fast. and it's downright stupid to have when people are only capable of hitting stuff in melee range, because it requires two players to literally run into eachother to get kills, ruining momentum and making the match look like one big clusterforget

hot

also i have a wip metro tdm that ill be finishing... whenever.
it has lots of cool lighting effects, but I still need a weaponset.
it'll probably be bushidos weapons unless I get H&K from khain or blockombat(never gonna happen) releases decently.

Everything is class-based. I like classic TDMs which there are none of

This is what I'm going to do with my server. Everyone gets the same weapons on each team, save a few hidden weapons that aren't ridiculously overpowered.

I miss the old deathmatches before all these fancy weapon packs came out, and before people made guns that you actually have to reload. Everyone got the default gun, then there are spears, swords, bows, sniper rifles (the original one) and a very rare default rocket launcher and the original minigun hidden around the map.

Lately people seem more interested in cloning TF2.

Excuse me if I can't fight well with guns because the computers I have access to suck. Terrain knife DMs aren't overdone, really, it's just the platform DMs and more commonly TDMs. Myself, Rexx, and StealthAssassin, along with Tracy Anderson for a while were easily killing eachother with a fast, higher jumping playertype that I made, even with minimal lighting, and due to the fact that we all had the minimal timing necessary, we were able to stab eachother and pass through or by the other player, since at that point one, both, or all of us were dead. Since the playertype was fast and the arena wasn't too large, we died and respawned quickly, making it fast-paced.
I guess it's a matter of opinion, but those are the facts.

Boo hoo. Just because you suck at them doesn't mean they shouldn't be hosted.
