Author Topic: qlg.exe - There's 83219 viruses on your computer! Give us thirty bucks!  (Read 1712 times)

Viruses are right up my alley. To a regular end-user of computers they may be unstoppable and whatnot, but I can get rid of the meat of them with cmd and taskmgr.

qlg.exe is a virus strain which renames itself based on which version of Windows it's on. Its effect is a typical "you have a virus, pay us" gambit - but they made two stupid mistakes.

One - I don't trust any anti-virus software I didn't install.
Two - I REALLY don't trust ANYTHING which is on my computer, claims to be from Microsoft, and wants money.

The name qlg.exe operates under is "Vista Security 2012" and it changes extension settings so that whenever you launch anything ending with .exe, the virus is launched instead. It also fails to account for a few things.

It allows use of the command prompt. The command prompt does NOT use extension settings for .exe files.
I'm an experienced computer user. I may not have the default Windows processes memorized, but I know a illegitimate description when I see it.

The virus's description in the Task Manager is "Error Reporting Service" - a function of Windows which is NOT a unique executable and runs as part of other Windows .exes.

Yeah, no. Goodbye, nice try, and then I ran Malwarebytes on its ass.

Can you be guard watch for my computer some time?

So what was the point of this topic then?

Get Malwarebytes and run a quick scan immediately.

To make sure we don't fall for it.

Aaanyways
haven't had many problems with viruses.
But this was a helpful post, so, thanks OP.

I had something come up saying "You have chosen to save poke.exe" once, it claimed to be from Microsoft but I highly doubted it, so I closed it out. I generally run a virus and malware scan whenever something like that pops up.

He said that he already did...?

I avoided that topic because it was full of stupidity. There was no point in even trying.
I really wanted to post in it, but then again. stuff like this happens if I "Bash" on people.

I'm curious why he posted this. Seems like attention whoring to me.
I've done pretty much everything stated in this topic on multiple occasions, including for other peoples computers. Just isn't a big deal.

Read the OP next time.

I had something like that once, but it literally didn't allow me to open anything. Like, when I tried to open the start menu, it came up with "START MENU DEACTIVATED" and 1000 virus messages popped up all over my machine, then it asked me to install antivirus software for $60.

What did you do?

What did you do?
I managed to get to system restore. It was one of the default shortcut keys that they forgot to shut down lol

I did, I just didn't read it carefully enough. I kinda skimmed it lol

I just find it amusing that they went through all the trouble to design and create a virus and even successfully got it onto my computer, only to have such a derpy description and to overlook stuff as obvious as cmd and taskmgr.

I had something similar.
I just Task manager'd while logging in, and hurried and closed the extremely obvious .exe
it was like lyo.exe with a description of "bqiduop"

If you are quick enough, you should always be able to stop a virus via Task manager.
