Author Topic: Running a computer with 128mb ram.  (Read 1450 times)

Nvidia Vanta 16mb
128mb ram
Pentium 4 1.60ghz
Windows XP Pro Edition

I think the main problem is the ram. Unfortunately, I can't buy any right now, let alone buy it online. When I first installed XP (as reccomended by KoopaScooper) it was fine, but after a day or two it slowed down to the point where it takes 5 seconds or more to load the start menu, a minute to open a folder, 3 minutes to open a page, and so on. I've scanned for virii (plural of virus, right?) and nothing came up. I've gone on no suspicious sites, I've used CCleaner, defragmented, and it's still slow. I was going to post this on my computer, but the computer freezes for 10 seconds or a script goes un-responsive or I get warnings about Virtual Memory or just something that really pisses me off because I can't do anything.
Please, I need a computer to use for homework and what not, and this is all I have. I can't buy anything for at least 2 years. I'm saving up money, and I only get $5 a week. There is nothing else I can do to get money. I've tried various times.

How big is your pagefile?

My Computer > View System Information > Advanced > Performance (Settings) > Advanced > Virtual Memory (Change)

Increasing it might not help much, but it could fix your virtual memory errors.

Loooooooooooooooooooooooooooo ooooooooooooooooool
You sure it isnt DOS?

LOL IBM
Go to Walmart and look at their IBMs, there's a sticker that warns you about it's position causing it to overheat and early system failure. Basically, they're saying: doing this will make it crash early, but either way, it's eventually going to crash.

I would give up on it, coolio.

I'll only give up on it if I get a new computer or if it breaks.

Why haven't you downgraded an earlier version of Windows?

I'm just going to buy you a new computer sometime so you stop whining about it daily

The minimum for XP is stated as 64MB but operating any OS on minimum specs is just awful.  At least 256-512MB is good for XP.

I tried RAM from my dead computer in my IBM.
Didn't work, monitor stayed in sleep mode.

Games are fine, everything else is slow.

God, I wish I had money to repair my computer. It wasn't great, but it could function, unlike this.
The lowest I can downgrade is to 2000, which I had driver problems and that's the oldest OS my wifi adapter supports.
