Author Topic: Need help fixing friend's laptop.  (Read 1563 times)

I have two disks:
Vista Repair Disk - They gave me the disk, but I can't boot. This would help a lot, I imagine, but I can't use it.
XP Pro - Going to install this, probably. I'll reformat the drive.

Nothing will boot. I've changed the boot settings around, but it's that black screen and the underline. I left it, came back, and there was the BootManager error. So, what do I do?

It seems to hang, or just not do anything with a CD. I've even tried booting without a CD or USB, same result.

Do those bootdisks still exist where you put them in and they gave you a DOS cmd prompt and you could format C: or whatever?

Just tried again.
Inserting USB/CD at HP Invert Logo : Hangs PC until CD/USB is removed, but CD drive is automatically ejected.
After logo : Doesn't load/isn't detected

So far, I only have one method for you knowing that you have a XP Pro disk.

1.Try booting from the XP Pro installation disk.
2.Once you get there, you'll see an option to repair/recover, which would most likely be the R key.
3.It'll then ask "What windows installation would you like to log onto?" Usually you would just put in the number 1 for that, then press enter
4.If needed, type in the password,
5.From that point, type in fixmbr, then fixboot.

There's my two cents.

Also, if you're having issues booting with the CD, have you tried accessing the bios and making the first boot priority the CD/DVD drive?

I've made the CD first boot priority, yes.

Tell me every single detail on what happens when you boot that laptop if you could please.
Nevermind, give me a minute I got enough from reading further into this topic..

Edit 2: Can I have the model # of this laptop?

Model Number? HP Pavillion dv6000, I guess.

Have you tried accessing the recovery manager? Try pressing F11 on boot.

F11 doesn't do anything.

Sounds like we are having problems getting it to recognize other things, which probably needs to be resolved first.
What exactly happens when you try boot of something else other than the hard drive? Does it freeze? Black screen? Slow?

Just tried again.

After logo : Tries to load disk, but ejects it.

Oh, and the USB would light up, but later would shut off and I'd have to reboot for it to work again. Same with the disks.

I should mention, it stopped working (I mean, disks and USB stopped booting) after I canceled the USB program. After I did, It showed C:\ and it was a CMD. I just shut it off without thinking.
