Go into the Bios, go under the diagnostics tab, and if this feature is there, do the "Hard Disk Self Test"

I probably won't be able to replace the HDD anytime soon, so I'll just give it back to him.

And you say you managed to get to a command prompt? What a waste. That would've fixed it, fdisk /mbr or dskchk or format or whatever. It all would've helped.

Well, I get a black screen w/ Flashing Underline. If I leave it for a while, I either get Bootmgr is missing or Operating System Not Found.

If it matters at this point (which is the laptop being basically dead)
The HP sticker on the bottom says:
HP Pavillion dv6700 (It's a 7 instead of a 0, like the case said)
