True, actually. But if you're using a shotgun with buckshot then chances are you're going to hit the whole side of the body you were aiming for, and then some drywall/windows/whatever's behind him to boot.
Also, your life doesn't have to be in much danger:

People like the ones you describe arent on these forums. Its a stereotypical "If that guy knows about guns he couldnt have learned it anywhere but call of duty." And, actually, most of them are actually interested in the make and design of the guns and their ammunition, and did not develop the interest from games.

dunno yet. i'm thinking along the lines of a revolver, chambered in .22 if i don't have a job by the time i get it and chambered in .357 if i do have a job

Think about this for a moment. Do hunters shooting bucks with buckshot have to be 5 feet away to hit their target? No. The spread on a shotgun is not that much. Unless you have a football field in your house, when you shoot someone with a shotgun it will hit them in a pretty small cluster.

Because of course you need to plaster your belongings with MLP.
That's basically just going to make whoever wanted to attack  you just laugh due to how stupid it is to associate a gun with a kid's show.

You can, reload a clip with shells. Reload a magazine with a clip or shell. And reload a gun with a magazine, or on certain guns with a clip or shell.

And if you really know what you are doing, you could reload a shell with a bullet.

EDIT: And on some guns you can reload the whole thing with a bullet and some powder.

Or, we could all reload our magazines and clips with BULLETS.
So we can't shoot because bullets don't have a firing charge, cartridges do.
