I was looking at Sonic-Cult's website for the first time in maybe a few months, and found a mention that the songs sound a lot alike. My memory of the first game doesn't serve me well, but I looked it up, and saw the similarities. However, there was a video in the Related Videos, and this really made the similarities stand out:
