Author Topic: Isn't the add on system a bit risky?  (Read 2061 times)

Why do I get the feeling CityRPG is Iban? either way welcome (back maybe).

But I don't think anyone would go through the trouble of making a virus that runs from an add-on just to probably have their key revoked later on.

A lot of you guys are misunderstanding this.. He's not saying the add-on itself causes/is a virus. He's saying the virus might be downloaded along with the add-on, or in the same file.

... How is this a virus in any way...
To be fair, it is risky, because you're giving idiots access to your console.

Aye most of the topic seems to be regarding malware though :D

A script calling a default function is not really a virus, but i guess it can be risky if you give it out to idiots i guess :D

You guys are saying that I am the one that does not understand how a virus or an add-on works, and how you guys are saying Add-Ons can't run viruses. That is not what I was asking, I was asking whether viruses can HIDE IN the add-on files NOT if they can execute them (how do you get those two things confused). I know there are viruses that spread to any new files or certain types of files that are created, so I just want to be informed if I can get viruses from downloading add-ons so that I can get better protection like purchasing another firewall. (obviously badspot would remove them once he would find out but still...)

If you are seriously that worried about an add-on somehow stealing your personal information, and taking over your computer, then I advise that you only download RTB-approved add-ons. All public add-ons submitted to RTB must be evaluated and processed before approval for downloading. You will be safe this way.

Yes, someone could place a malicious executable file in an add-on .zip, but Blockland could not execute it, you'd have to open/extract the zip and run it yourself.

The most malicious thing I can think of doing would be giving an add-on developer an add-on with that has a TCP object in it that steals/deletes the add-ons.

why is this a function

Probably a test for an error logging system.

If you code it pretty well, you can help prevent idiots from doing stupid things better, though.

Answer: yes, they can hide viruses

If one had a virus it would need user interaction to actually do something at the operating system level, such as opening it and and running the virus. Other than that, downloading and installing add-ons, is completely safe for every realm but Blockland's itself.

write 1,000,000 files with 1,000,000 lines of uselses bullstuff. You can take up gigabytes if you plant it carefully.

But then wouldn't the person have to download this gigabytes of crap?
