Avatar not transparent?

Why is it that when I upload a transparent image as my avatar, the background becomes black? I can see transparent images but when I try to upload one, its background becomes black instead.

Yes, they are transparent and yes they are pngs.

When you make your avatar, you must re size it to 75x75 BEFORE you upload it. Blockland Forums will re size it otherwise, and it will be blurry and nontransparent.

and yes they are pngs.

they may seem to be jpegs because I'm pretty sure that any image the forum has to resize is as a result changed to a .jpg

jpg does not support transparency
go with .png or .gif
and make sure its 75x75
