When I was learning to drive with my cousin over the summer, the took me on to the pasture and we drove for a while, when he told me to gun it, I did. I almost flipped his Suburban over 5 times, because he told me to gun it in some sloped areas. After that he took me to a wheat field and let me just tear it up, while he was telling me "Hard left, now easy right..... Slow down right here.... Hard left... Gun it.... Okay, now stop, and crank the wheel all the way to the left," He trusted me with his Suburban which felt good, but doing 6 donuts in a wheat field, throwing dirt everywhere was awesome.
On topic: That really sucks. At least you got out un-harmed.
