SOPA and PIPA are bills that are trying to regulate copyright infringement through the process of making the websites that host content liable for any copyrighted material that is posted or associated with their website in anyway. For websites like Google and Youtube, monitoring every single user posted content or website associated with them that has copyright infringement on them is close to or is impossible. What this will do is lets say Youtube missed ONE copyright infringed video, Congress would have the right to block Youtube's DNS or even its IP address. This is also the same for websites we use to post or view content such as Facebook or Wikipedia.
If this bill is passed it will greatly decrease the use of certain websites and smaller sites that do not have the resources to monitor their entire site will inevitably be shutdown. Lets say two people decide to start a blog. If the bill were to become law then it would require these two people to monitor their entire site. That would take and unbelievable amount of time and effort each and everyday and sooner or later their going to get tired of it or get sued for illegal content they missed. The Freedom Of Speech on the internet will start to fade away due to the constant shutdown of any site that could have a post deemed offensive by the Congress in which the bills will allow them to basically erase them from the internet. If you support these bills you are clueless about technology and how this will effect our economy, jobs, and our freedom of speech upon the internet.
The problems with SOPA and PIPA are not that its not have the right idea of trying to lower copyright infringement but, the content contained in the bills are so broad and far from the original goal that it will give Congress more rights over more things then just copyright. Please raise awareness and help keep these bills from passing or the Internet as we know will cease and sites such as Wikipedia will not survive in the new internet created by the bills as stated by the creator of Wikipedia himself. Even one of the people that helped create the Internet itself is against the bills saying it will destroy what the internet was created for which is not promoting copyright infringement but, will destroy the freedom of speech and innovation that the internet was created to increase(not his exact words but the basic information just written in my own words).
Many sights are protesting the bills in a "blackout" which shuts down the sight. If you visit Wikipedia they will have a setup where you can search who you representatives are in your state and promotes you to call them and say that you do not support the SOPA and PIPA bills. Thats all it takes to help keep this bill from becoming a law. You do not in anyway have to call up your representative but, I do stress that you in some way help out.
