Not 100% maybe, but they do say friend and black man/men/rider alot in the first half of Fellowship of the Ring.

That is, until they learn what they're called
But friend's a common thing. And they say queer a LOT in the Hobbit.

They do. If you'll remember when Tolkien wrote those books, it was common terminology back then.
