Author Topic: Blockland Shaders/Shadows - Difference between old and new  (Read 7663 times)

Remind me again why kompressor wants to remove Terrain for this. (I dont find it much of a difference)

Current Blockland:

--------------------------------

Future Blockland (Shaders and shadows)

There is a difference, basically there are shadows on every single type of brick. And if you look closely inside the tunnel, there is a complete shadow on the bottom. But the shadows from the other image posted by kompressor look nothing like this one:   (Maybe because the sun in the picture below is hitting the area where the screenshot was taken, compared to the other images.

In conclusion, I like this idea, I did not support it before but now I do. Although I still think getting rid of terrain is sort of a bad idea, on the bright side these aren't just shadows and shaders, this is dynamic lighting (which Blockland's main competitor Roblox is getting as well) it is worth removing terrain. Obviously with terrain getting moved we will have:

A. A Higher Brick Limit
B. The new v22 update will probably be 64bit support for Blockland, raising the brick limit even HIGHER.
C. Making other game developers who are competing with Blockland jelly.
D. Future graphical updates can be made, better view distance, anti aliasing, etc.

This is my opinion. (Its also my opinion that I find Roblox being Blocklands main competitor...what other game lets you build and script online?)

No, keeping it 32bit does not stop the brick limit from going higher.

I was expecting a picture of a giant build and then a picture of an empty slate.

This update looks cool and stuff but their should have been a serious heads up before. It probably wasn't announced earlier to avoid protests but it's not making any difference in the response by delaying the announcement.

you missed the point.

this update isnt just about updating graphics for blockland. its a major engine fix that will open doors for many new things in bl's future.

Which yet again makes me ask what new feature Badspot and Kompressor will roll out in the future.

im thinking of a few :D

but im sure thats a can of worms they dont want us gossiping about so soon. you know how the forums get when we get wind of something special.

In which case the point should be stressed more, and that doesn't explain the lack of prior announcement.

Maybe not for online, because I remember how Badspot said it has something to do with internet as well. But im pretty sure it would raise the brick limit for single player, which is what matters when people are making large constructions. Not to bring roblox in here but if you know the answer then please tell me, how does Roblox not have a brick limit for downloading bricks but BL does (I know it has to do with the engine but is that it?)

we did get an announcement. its called the development topic in the development section.
komp made an announcement dev-log topic about it...

are you blind? or just stupid.

here is the announcement. i believe you even posted in it...

honestly I think the new lighting is terrible.
look at it for a moment.

What? The new lighting is great. Look closely, it gets darker the further in the tunnel since there is no daylight shining in. And we are getting shadows with it too.

Are you talking about the glare? That will probably be toned downed before release.

I did. It still looks awesome.

You're an idiot for the one reason that you think Blockland and Roblox are competing. Don't hop on the bandwagon.

Interiors and terrains would have probably been removed at some point anyway because they complicate the game's code tremendously. They looked and functioned fine in 1998, but it's 2012. Don't hate change just because your precious terrain is being taken out. There are ~82 servers with a slate-like map currently. This isn't including the ones I don't know that are slate edits. This is out of ~120 servers.

In simple terms, slate maps are more widely used than interior/terrain maps.

What I'm really liking about the shadows is how the lights don't break through other blocks but instead makes smooth lighting.

Which yet again makes me ask what new feature Badspot and Kompressor will roll out in the future.
Ooh! Ooh!
Buildable vehicles?
