Author Topic: Is it possible to love a fictional character?  (Read 1889 times)

I've wondered about this a lot before
is it possible to love a fictional character?
not just infatuation, I mean an actual emotional love for it
it can still include loveual attraction obviously, but is it possible to love the character?

nope
seeing as how you can't have actual interaction with the character, no.

love doesn't have to go both ways though, you can love someone without them loving you back
if the character shows a lot of his or her (or otherwise) personality in the work, wouldn't you be able to decide that that's the sort of thing you're emotionally attracted to, and be attracted to it as such?

it still wouldn't work
love, at least in my mind, doesn't work without any interaction
for instance
um
random person random person
feist.
she's a good person. which I am attracted to
she's a loving fantastic singer
and I've seen her before, particularly in videos
but I've never interacted with her, so I can't decide if I like how she interacts, if that makes sense
if you've never interacted with someone, it's not love.
it may be infatuation or attraction, but not love.

i'm thinking if you want the character to exist so you may proceed to forget him/her/it then yeah you can love a character.

you don't actually have to talk to them to love them
if you see how they interact with other people and they display their personality well, couldn't you love them?
it would be even more possible if you also knew what they were thinking, and with fictional characters, that's more than most of the time something you get to read or hear or see

that's just infatuation though

in that case if you love the fact that they're a character in that whatever form of media then maybe.

I don't think you love them, I think you love the IDEA of them.

well, technically that's going to be the case anyway, because they are just an idea

I think maybe I know I've had dreams where I met someone got to know/love them and when I wake up I literally cried because I was sure I'd never see them again

yes I am sure there's something wrong with me but there you go

We will be together forever and get married and have 400 babies.

What are you planning to do then, with this information?

vsauce (YouTuber) posted a video about how much emotion you feel when you love someone.
Basically, the amount of happiness you get when you like someone is equivalent to winning 13,000 dollars gambling. When you truly love someone, it could be the same as winning 50,000 dollars. I doubt you could feel that much happiness from a fiction character, simply because your mind can't go that far. So I say no.

no you can't love katia
