are there any minor differences i'm not seeing? which is better?

JPG has image compression which looks worse when blown up and is not optimal when editing images.

PNG has more quality and is just better in general.

PNG is the best. If you look close, it's sharper than JPG.

Depends on what you're doing.  For just a pic like that to show someone and host, JPG is better because its more compressed and saves file size.  But for editing and doing something high rez (like a game texture or something) that you don't want to look ugly, PNG is best.

Some programs don't deal with PNGs very well because they're larger and more high rez.

I thought the only difference was that PNG could be transed ;-;

I just looked at the crates in the images. JPG looked a bit more blurred.

Jpeg can be trans but you'd have some extra blobs of pixels to remove.

only thing jpg should be used for is websites cuz they load faster.
nowhere else is it acceptable

for photography png's and gif's are stuff
jpeg's are okay if you're not printing very big
tiff's, psd's and such are good
nef or cr2 is best

but we're on the internet so none of that applies :P

OP needs some glasses.
