You can join using Mibbit by doing this:

1: Go to chat.mibbit.com
2: (Image) (You can just use "irc.esper.net" rather then "apocalypse.esper.net")
3: Click connect and you're done :)

How to make sure no one steals your name:

Go to the system window and type:
"/nickserv register PASSWORD EMAIL

Go to your email and follow the instructions from there.
This will register your CURRENT name.
