Author Topic: "America" is not a country???  (Read 3205 times)

Well I got in an argument with a lot of people, and wanted to get an opinion....

People were telling me "America is a country" While I was telling them, that it was a continent... My argument (Green is me)
This isn't the conversation, but heres how its summed down (Red is other people)

>What country is America
>The one we live in (U.S)
>No we live in the UNITED STATES, "Of america" is referring to the continent, people in mexico could say they live in America
>America is not a country, you just grew up learning it wrong, the U.S is our country
>This niga just said america aint a country l0O0AOlOLOLOL

So basically I'm saying America is a loving continent. Not the united states. I'm saying people in mexico could say they live in America and be right, because they live in the continent of america.

They say, that America is our country, and NORTHAMERICA is our continent.

I mean thats true, but am I right about America being referred to as a country is wrong? Because In reality not only does the U.S live in North and south America, a lot of other countries do to.

"where do you live?"
"america"
"WHICH ONE"
"-_-"
sign,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
stupid people are stupid

We live in the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, on the continent of NORTH AMERICA, comprised of THESE TWENTY-THREE COUNTRIES.

You can use it either way. Stop complaining about it.

it's an idiomatic expression.  we do live in the United States, but we have taken the name America.  you refer to the continent as "North America," not "America" or "the Americas."

saying "ain't" is wrong, but people do it anyway

As everyone else is saying

It's really just uses of words.

May I remind you no one in Canada or Mexico refers to themselves as "Americans" or say they live in America

And if we're not in America, what the hell do we call ourselves?

saying "ain't" is wrong, but people do it anyway
because they think it's in the dictionary

because they think it's in the dictionary
that's not why, people do it regardless of any dictionaries

I don't live in America as a continent. I live in North America.

because they think it's in the dictionary

America is both a country (United States of America) and a continent (North America/South America). Given the context, you can generally tell which the person is referring to. Though, people don't just say 'America' when referring to the continents. It's either separate (North/South), or 'the Americas' when referring to both.

most people consider america being comprised of both north and south america
the same with europe and asia
considering there's no ocean separating the two people, instead using cultures, becoming eurasia
also, the same rule should apply to the americas
there's actually no ocean separating both north and south america
the only thing separating the two are the panama cbrown town

And if we're not in America, what the hell do we call ourselves?

People seem to be ignoring this.
