Q: Is it safe?
A: Yes, you are simply dreaming and sleeping but with consciousness. There is nothing unnatural or dangerous about it.
Q: Is it real?
A: Lucid dreaming has been practiced by millions of people for a long time. But just for peace of mind, yes, research on the brain and dreaming concluded that lucid dreaming does indeed exist and it may even be a special different form of consciousness.
Q: Is it cult related / new age / evil?
A: No, it is neither of these. Everyone in their life time will experience a lucid dream naturally, but many forget or don't identify it. People who believe lucid dreaming is evil, ungodly, unnatural, or related to 'black magic' or any other nonsense are grossly misinformed and do not understand what being lucid means.
Q: Will it ruin my sleep?
A: Lucid dreaming requires you to be in a deep sleep and experiencing rapid eye movement (REM) so you will have to be in a state of quality sleep in the first place. The brain is always very busy during sleep, lucid or not. It will not impact your sleep, cause sleep walking, or any other sleep issues.
Lucid dreaming is no more harmful then regular dreaming. If anything the opposite. Anybody who thinks it is dangerous or harmful in any way needs to do more research and learn what they are talking about first.
As for sleep paralysis, some dreamers notice it every so often and some dreamers never experience it.
You can enter sleep paralysis when going to sleep. It has nothing to do with being lucid. If you decide to try for a lucid dream or not, you are still just as likely to end up experiencing SP. The only reason why its noticed more when lucid dreaming is because people are more aware of their sleep process. If you want to avoid that as much as possible, just do DILD.
I have been lucid dreaming for what will soon be a decade and I've experienced "paralysis" for a few seconds about 7 times. Thats hundreds of lucid dreams a year and less than 1 paralysis experience per year
You don't have to go from awake to dreaming to get lucid (called a WILD, wake induced lucid dream). You can teach yourself to realize it mid-dream.
