In the book, they show fire a cannon to signify a death, and show who died at night through a projection in the sky.
it's been a while since I read the book but I think it was pretty clear how he died.You didn't see him get killed by dogs in the movie. It could have been a ninja.

Not really, they just said Thresh was chased into wheat fields by the district two kid after the feast, and then later that night the cannon fired, and it was pretty clear the district two kid killed him.
also, how come the people in the capitol wore stupid clothes and makeup? my sister did a horrid job of explaining it
