This, I'm not going to tell my parents unless they ask or I want to introduce a boyfriend.

This is the best method because it also makes sure you are loving sure those are your true feelings and not a passing phase.

If he's completely flamboyant open about it at school then most bullies will think that would be a douche move and not bully him.

If they support what he thinks then whatever he says should be fine.

he should subtly try and find out their views on gay people

Iunno, either pretty much every school in alberta hates gays or everyone in in my town hates them. I honestly call me a richard do not care for them. :(
