Author Topic: THEY DIED! THEY ALL DIED! (goldfish)  (Read 4477 times)

NOTE: The water was at proper temperature. And we let them adjust first. But they started dying BEFORE we put them in our tank. So we put them in the tank and fed them a teeny bit. But it was too late.

So my dad bought some goldfishes(about 5 big ones and 20 small ones) today around 2:00 PM. And they slowly started dying about an hour later. And it is currently 12:30 AM and only 2 big ones remain. And they can barely swim. It's kind of sad to see them slowly, painfully drifting off into the next life.

But why?

Our tank is clean.

Our water is fine. (I think)

We have all the right equipment and stuff.

It is Petco. They shoved all the big ones in the same bag. Same with the little ones.

Plus, the fish already looked like they were in bad shape before we put them in the tank.

The fish looked as if they were sick and not fed properly. My dad is currently working on getting a refund for the fish.

The moral of the story: never buy from petco.

Fish have unusually low lifespans. Wit the exception of some such as koi.

Lizards are pretty cool, but that's just what I think.

poor fishies.

I watched my pet fish die, and boy was that sad as forget.

Some of them were just babies and they didn't even last a day in our home. :c

I know, right.

They were quite small. And it was a large tank.

It's about this size, but a tad smaller.

I always hesitate to go to petco just because everything smells like stuff
especially the fish tanks

You put them in water too soon.  You needed to let them adjust to the room temperature, I thought that was common knowledge.

My father said that one or two of the tanks had dead fish in them. It's saddening.

We let them adjust for about an hour and a half.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ammonia_poisoning probably then. In an older aquarium, there are bacteria that convert your fish's wastes from things that are toxic (ammonia and nitrite) to one that is much less toxic to them (nitrate). In your new tank, there wasn't enough time for the bacteria to have built up to a sufficient number, nor is there usually enough gravel for them to colonize that you get a large enough population to do a good job of this.

Our tank is pretty old, actually. But it's possible because of the way my mother cleaned the tank before we put them in.

Did you remember to de-chlorinate the water?

oh stuff i just remembered i have a fish
