I was wondering if transparencies would take up more space than the same image with the background a solid color (like a picture of a person with the background either trans'd or solid white/black etc etc).

i would think that a transparent image would take up less space because you are getting rid of the background completely

Yes, making it a .png and having transparencies DOES affect the amount of data the image is

   

            (Solid) 1.5 KB                     (Transparent) 1.7 KB

Alpha channel uses up more space, of course.
