Author Topic: Would it be possible to turn an old computer into a file server?  (Read 1026 times)

So, I was wondering, if I had an old mac laying around, could I wipe it, install some form of linux, and turn it into a file server for my house? I have this macintosh with a 160 gigabyte hard drive, and I was wondering if I could use it to store important things that I probably didn't want to lose. Is this possible?

yes. Heard freenas works well.

my friend took an old computer and had an ftp server on it and is now currently hosting three tf2 dedi's on it. i cant see why not.

Install Ubuntu Server, check OpenSSH and Samba. Requires basic knowledge of the POSIX toolchain though.
