Author Topic: Infrequent but very loud beeps coming from my computer  (Read 1443 times)

I was going to just brush this off but I wanted to make sure there's nothing seriously wrong with my computer.

Last night while I was richarding around on the internet, my laptop assaulted my ears with an extremely loud beep. I've heard of computers beeping when there's a problem, but I was under the impression that those sounds came directly from the computer, and not through the speakers (or in this case, my headphones). That may not be true for a laptop though, I'm hardly a hardware expert. This has happened at least one other time, and it scares the stuff outta me. No dialog boxes or other prompts appear when it happens, and I'm generally just browsing the web when it drops the auditory bomb. Just now it beeped twice in quick succession, and I'm getting a little worried. I'm not really sure what query to input to Google to find a solution, so I'm just asking here if anyone knows what it means.

It's a Dell Studio laptop running Vista Home Premium if it makes any difference.

At least it reminded me to update my hard-drive backup.

My first thought is a keyboard buffer overflow causing the beep but quite a few things can cause a beep to come from a computer.

But you're not typing anything are you while it happens?

No, I've heard that beep before and it's definitely not that

does it sound like a preset beep or a glitchy beep

This has happened to me before
i still have no idea what it was
although onetime it did a three secong long beep then my computor shut off without me touching anything
then i turned it back on and nothing ever happened like that again.

oh forget no
I've had this many times.
It's something wrong With the memory or something.

Come on one of you computer geeks correct me

Come on one of you computer geeks correct me
if the computer posts correctly it's not the memory
check the bios to see if it says anything in the logs
also look in the bios as well to see if the battery life is dying or something

Well I wouldn't describe it as "glitchy" so I'll say preset

What would I be looking for in the logs?

Also my battery has been dead for about a year and this is a recent thing

Did you try restarting it? That actually fixes most problems.
On a slightly related note, my computer has been making random clicking noises out of the speakers.
Also, I caught it randomly turning on for a few seconds and then turning off after a few seconds twice last week.
I haven't seen the turning on thing since I restarted, and I think the clicking noises will go away after I restart.
