Too dark. They would make the tops of the bricks colors seem a shade or two darker than they should be.
It would also look awkward going up to a lighter wall/brick side.

If you want this effect throughout, you should darken the brick sides the same as the tops, but at that point it would look weird.

no one has ever tried just removing the edges so you only get a square in the middle. Having a square would be the only thing that makes sense as bricks can't snap together when the studs are sloped.... well, at least they look sloped to me.

That's very interesting, not best textures ever because they don't actually look good, but in a more realistic representation, as Fob said, the bricks can at least snap togheter.
