I don't think that's how it happened at all. I think she had her 3 bending abilities she already had taken away, but since she was the avatar and hadn't learned airbending she could. Seeing Mako about to lose his bending somehow triggered the ability to work.

My guess is that it his blood bending only separates the link to the elements already learned or have used. Since she had not fully learned or used airbending yet, that element was not available to be blocked.

So in her desperate situation she managed to learn/figure out airbending and use it just like that.
