20 Percent Cooler - Megathread

It's still awfully unorganized inside though. What's needed is either proper threaded replies (which would make megathreads a viable option) or some sort of thread tagging system (which would remove the need for them). I don't see SMF implementing either of those any time soon though (and even less see BS updating these forums to it within 10 years of the release). Threads aren't exactly a sparse resource.

For reference, try comparing it to Drupal (especially with the advanced forum module).  Drupal works way better for it, and that's not even supposed to be a forum software. Not to mention that you run both the site and the forum on the same software (which means that you get a unified design, etc).

I don't really see the appeal of vB or IPB. phpBB seems mostly about equal to SMF, although I haven't used it in a while. Another problem is that Badspot is trying to use SMF as a catch-all solution, some stuff would work better on other software (the help boards on something like OSQA, sugg&req possibly on something like JIRA or BugZilla, dev should be split into bug tracker and blog IMO).
