I've changed all my controls long ago, but yes, if you hold the 'walk' key while jetting, you can fly straight forward instead of falling.

Never noticed it, I just set it so I can use my arrow keys to select anything on menus, up down left and right.

I do something similar, except I grab the back of the collar with both of my hands, pull up and forward

slightly slower accelleration, but yes.
you also start moving down slowly again, it's not a magic fix
