The thing I don't like about private/public is, that it sounds like there will be no additions to the canon if the server was public. If that's true, I'll just stay out of the public ones, no sense in wasting my time on all the RP stuff to have it voided/ignored/whatever

No, events can and will still happen in the Public server.

Private servers will probably just be a lot more reserved and serious- no need to deal with newbies.
