This is basically every shallow plot in a nutshell. Even if it's fiction the main storyline can't just pop up out of nowhere unless it's explained to the point where very little to no questions about the story can be asked and not easily answered. For a plot to develop properly there either needs to be (back)story building up to the main storyline or a sudden plot which is explained properly.
