Whilst it isn't required in the specification, it doesn't hurt to include one, right!?

Some HTTP servers would throw a 400 Bad Request error.

Personally I'd say that's more of a server configuration fault than anything else.

Jes, why aren't you using a public link like this:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/58130173/Tool_LightWand.zip

that's
dl.dropbox.com:80

u/58130173/Tool_LightWand.zip

much simpler then that crap you have in the op

You should really stop being so cheap and trying to host things from a Dropbox. They'll see the traffic and disable your account - it's against the terms of their service.

Then what else would I use?

Only if your traffic is megahuge

i mean like in the hundreds of megabytes in a really short period of time

one lousy txt file that's hardly a kilobyte at most isn't gonna cause them to do this.

All of my released add-ons that aren't on RTB are on the forums and hosted on dropbox.

I don't exactly get stuffloads of volume, but I doubt jes is either.

Well hey look I provide a free service which does exactly this, so I guess that!

Otherwise there are hundreds of free (albeit stuff) webhosts which will be fine for what you're trying to do.

Except your stuff has to be approved.
You also don't offer hosting individual text files.

Please, correct me if I'm wrong.

Why do you need to host a text file containing a version when RTB does versioning as part of it's functionality?

Where?

It's called RTB, you might have heard of it.

Except your stuff has to be approved.

Quality control, how horrible.

and if it doesn't get approved, or it isn't an add-on, what then?

I could be horribly wrong, but I don't think jes's project is an add-on.

If you're doing more than just hosting a version number:
http://greekmods.webs.com/mods/Gamemode_Slayer/Help/help_Release.txt

It's also good learning experience.

Oh, and don't get me started on how some event add-ons take a week or longer to get approved.
