Author Topic: Question about computer power supply for gpu?  (Read 1571 times)

From the above site:
"500 Watt or greater power supply with two 75W 6-pin PCI Express® power connectors recommended (600 Watt and four 6-pin connectors for ATI CrossFireX™ technology in dual mode)."
Let's say I had 4 of the above GPUs. Would that mean I'd need 2000 watts of power, plus enough for the other components of the computer?

(I'm not crossfiring the cards, just running 4 of them separately in a case.)

Can you even crossfire up to 4? I thought the max was two.

It says 4 cores. I assumed this has one core? :o

bamp
this is important because reasons

No, you would need like 1000 watts at most. There is a computer megathread also, you could post there and you would get an answer pretty quick.

The power supply requirement includes breathing room for a good CPU, mobo, ram and all the other trimmings, it sounds like that GPU requires about 100~ watts of power just for itself, so a 900 watt would probably do the job with enough breathing room for the rest of your system.
At least, I'm fairly certain that's how it works, PSU's aren't particularly my forte

Oh alright, see my GPU has two cores thus I thought the max was two. Didn't even consider single core GPU's.

just buy an 800W
its big enough for high end CPU, multiple HDDs, and a high end GPU.
800 should be more then enough

if you are using dual high end GPUS then you may need a 1200w

dual core gpu counts as 1 gpu for power

but is it possible to have 4 radeon hd 5850's in 1 computer?

well who said 4? i meant 2

(nvidia can do 4)

I said 4.
Let's say I had 4 of the above GPUs.
And I can't do Nvidia. The cards need to be ATI because reasons.

I wish I could use Nvidia for this project. But the Nvidia cards are stuff for what I'm doing.

Are you bitcoin mining?

Crossfire only does two. There aren't enough slots on the card to do three and above.

Yes, my friend's dad has connections with microsoft and other stuff to make it ridiculously profitable

Oh, we have enough slots on the mobo to hold four cards. But I'm wondering if they'll work simultaneously.
