Author Topic: Learning to program.  (Read 1832 times)

Hi, my name is Cheemio. I've always wanted to make add-ons for Blockland, and I figured here was a good place to start. I plan to learn Java eventually. Tourqe would be an easier liftoff as I already know a lot about how add-ons work and the lot. Besides being an expert eventer in Blockland, I have no past experiences with programming.

If anyone has any topics, websites, or (Doubtful on this) even willing to teach me in person, I would greatly appriticate the help. Thanks for reading!

I'm quite willing to teach you in person but not over STEAM. I'm also only willing to teach you if you take it seriously.

I am serious about this. Skype?

We could just use Blockland since it'll allow you to more easily manipulate the console than if you have to keep switching windows.

Err, I thought scripting involved creating/editing a text file in an add-on .zip. I must have a lot to learn.

That's one part of scripting.
Strictly speaking the .zip is not necessary.
If you join RTB Connect and send me a PM I can explain it in more detail for you.

Okay. I can't play Blockland today, but I'll PM you tomorrow.

I would recommend learning the basic of programming here:
http://www.codecademy.com/
Complete the whole "Getting Started with Programming" section.

While this isn't pointed toward TorqueScript (the syntax will be different between the two), rather JavaScript, you can get the basic idea of programming from there. After that, learning TorqueScript should be easier than if you tried learning with no prior programming knowledge.

When I started scripting I sucked at first because all of the tutorials sucked. Xalos should be able to teach you sufficiently. It would probably be easier for him to teach from the ground up, with no different syntaxes to confuse Cheemio.

That's true I guess. I taught myself TorqueScript using Wallet's class notes and Iban's stuff as a reference and it was hard for me to learn. I think with that I may have been better off, why I suggested it.

Just realized stupid autocorrect turned "Xalos" into "Carlos"

I would recommend these SS tutorials:

Go to this link: http://scatteredspace.com/forum/index.php?board=58.0
Go to these tutorials in order (they are at the top of the page):
1) Beginners Guide to TorqueScript
2) (Lesson 1) Variables
3) (Lesson 2) Functions
4) (Lesson 3) Conditional Statements

Thanks for the help, everyone! :D I didn't expect to get replies this quickly. I heard this is the slowest board here.

Lies! It's a pretty active group here. Glad we could help, good luck!

In actuality, the slowest board is over in mapping help.

Alternatively, AoT Clan Discussion.
