Rename Arma 2 Free in your program files/steam/steamapps/common/ folder to Arma 2 and launch CO.

arma 2 free, when you rename it ArmA 2, it becomes compatible with CO.

if bohemia interactive didn't want it to happen they would have made it so that OA would scan the files before mounting it.

I only have arma 2 free, not OA. In the @I44 files though, there were files for installing without OA.
I'll try installing again.
