Author Topic: Marching band: should it be considered a sport??  (Read 4476 times)

Ok this is a serious question. I think personally, marching is a sport. I'm to tired to explain why at the moment, I will edit OP tomorrow with it.

maybe. I use to not think so but I heard all of the preparation it takes in college to be in marching band. They run quite a bit. But just marvhing out there at the games, not really.

By that logic laying bricks or mixing cement by hand could be considered as sports too. Just because something is physically demanding does not necessarily make it a sport.

Alright, what are the requirements for a sport?
Teamwork: the band is your team
Competition: Bands go to contests and compete for the highest rank
Practice: It takes a lot of practice, because it has to be perfect.
Coach: directors

marching is competitive and has tournaments

Its not just that.

It also needs excitement.

Marching bands don't have much exictement.

Thus, not a sport.

So basically office work is sports too?

No. In no way or form.

taking the stairs is a sport
so is having to get up from sitting on the computer 24/7 to go to the bathroom

dosnt need to be a sport. for schools it just has to be equivalent of gym class, and it is.

debating if something is a sport or not is different.

like i dont think golf is a sport, but JUST a game.

sport

an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature

marching isn't really an athletic activity

yeah but playing chess isn't either

yeah but playing chess isn't either
and since when is chess a sport

there's competitive chess but it's not a sport at all

No its not a sport. Preparing for it, yea. Running and physical exertion sure. But imo its just a bunch of nerds on a field. just because something is competitive doesn't make it a sport. I understand you work as a team and blah blah, and there's competitions, but mreh.

all you can get for it is a letterman, and only kids with no athletic ability will only do marching band.
