Author Topic: House - I finally decided to make one  (Read 1639 times)

I've made a ton of houses in the past, mainly on servers, but I've either lost the saves for them or decided that actually building a nice building in the middle of a field of spam isn't exactly the most complementing scenery.

So I decided to build myself a house on single-player.

The interior is more of an afterthought; I am pretty terrible at small details, but that can always be improved at a later date.

Anyway, screenshots (I could have gone a little easier on the DOF):

The back of the house:

Front:

Above view, also showing the terrain I added for no reason and the whole 256x256x32 terrain block:

Staircase; the front door is behind and to the left:

Rather bland kitchen (Right of the stairs). The chimney/extractor pipe thing doesn't go anywhere, and it's actually just holding the ceiling up:

Dining room (Left of the stairs). Big house, can't afford chairs. Stools for all:

Upstairs - Bedroom behind camera, library opposite. Lighting on

Feel free to rate x/10 and suggest any improvements. Interior ideas would actually be greatly appreciated.

Not too bad.

Not sure what I don't like about it, there's just something odd.

It's pretty good except for the part where the roof appears to support itself.

Wooden supports on the top floor perhaps?

Sounds good.
And then make a ladder or something to get above the support beams so you have a little attic.

i love that whole library thing, nice

For some reason I had a sudden onrush of nostalgia when I saw this. I guess it reminds me of my early Blockland days or something. Nice build, I love the staircase and double door design.

sort of weird how someone can afford a full library and yet can't afford chairs

Books are more important than seats I guess.

That'd be tribute to the fact that I haven't really built anything or played regularly since the IDs were in the 20k range.

Added support struts to the roof and some additional pillars.

The exterior could use some work, just to make it look less boxy and square, but the interior is pretty good.

don't ever support your roof with an aesthetic feature, you might go "oh, i think this would look better over here: WAND" and have your rood topple down, along with any floors the roof was supporting. it's happened to me a lot, i've learned to always create invisible blocks as supports.

This, unless the structures are made purely for decoration/detail.

of course, i'm talking more about holding your roof up with a lamp or something. in this case he was holding his second floor up with the chimney of a stove.

The ceiling above the kitchen is pretty much two 16x16 baseplates across a gap 32x16, which is the size of the room. I never actually built the house on a proper baseplate-sized platform, mainly because I had already put down floor tiles, and partly because it's fun to make floating floors. I believe the whole thing is now stuck together by the bookcases, one of which is attached to the baseplate near the stairs, which is in turn supported by the stairs themselves.

Basically the entire right-hand wing of the house makes no sense and is held together by bookcases.
