Browsers can still display images without a file extension. Take any image, remove the file extension, then drag it into your browser window. It will show just fine.

Chrome goes out of its way to identify the file type, Firefox downloads it if the web server doesn't say what file it is.

Notice how I said with something like Imgur, if you try to post an image from Imgur without the extension, the image breaks.
