Compared to English, not very hard. English contains a large amount of sounds while Japanese doesn't, sentence structure is simpler and there are no gliding vowels.

Numerous amount of characters though.

Numerous amount of characters though.

About 2000 in common use, 800 used for names, and about 50,000-100,000 total. Good luck with that.

7, easy to remember, hard to pronounce

do you plan on spending a lot of time in  japan or something?

Colleges like when people know multiple languages

Conversational Japanese isn't that bad, but the slang and terms normal people use can take you a lifetime. The best way to learn a language is to go to its native country and speak it with people.

Well if he's not planning on going to japan I would just think it would be better to learn a useful language. Unless he's already pretty fluent in one.

English, Spanish, German.

Only universal languages.

Learning a language over summer isn't going to happen, I studied indonesian for several years and compared to japanese it is like a piece of cake, yet having an ordinary conversation is difficult.
