What is it, why is it that number, and how can we make it higher?

more RAM?

Networking.

You could create a hacky workaround to bypass it, but it's a bad idea. I've heard bricks stop ghosting after you go past it.

I'd rather not forget up BL haha

The brick limit is extremely pretty high, I doubt a server will exceed the limit.
(excluding unlimited mining)

As long as you don't host it, you have enough RAM, and you don't intend to upload the monstrosity of a save file anywhere (lest someone have to download maybe 20 mb of save, probably more), you could break it and probably be safe.

not counting badspot

ok i made a 64x64 then put plates all over it.  if I make it 63 plates high I will be over the limit for bricks

you are loving stupid. the guy is asking for a number. quit trying to sound smart, there IS a simple answer.

What is it, why is it that number, and how can we make it higher?
Jesus bisjac, I figured you were more attentive than this.

you mean 1x1s?
yup.

apparently once you hit 256,000 you can't build anymore.

poop.  this poses a problem if I actually manage to go through with what I want to do.

Is this due to an engine limitation?

he knows there is no limit in single mode. everyone knows that.
I'd rather not forget up BL haha
you think he meant anything otherwise lug?

YOU are loving dumb

Technically, I guess.
I can't explain it properly without kalphiter coming in here and telling me that I'm an imbecile, so I won't try.
I know it pertains to math, you'll note that 256 is one of those numbers like so:
1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512, 1024

Sorta like memory, you know how flashdrives come in 512mb sticks and 1 gb sticks?

that sort of thing. Some kind of a limitation on how much data can be sent to the client without modifying networking code.

Blame Kompressor.

no limit in singleplayer is news to me.

I gave him an answer and told him why he couldn't do it. How am I in the wrong for answering 2/3 of the OP's questions?
