go for the "shiny"/"easy" thing (Garage Band)

Its a common misconception just because Apple has mastered end-user simplicity that no "official" Mac program can offer such heavy grunt. I think you'll find Garageband being "shiny" or "easy" doesn't compromise its ability to perform.

They've mastered making stuff shiny, not making stuff simple/easy. Also, how do you add custom effects and MIDI synthesizers?

There are no programs that offer such a high level of polish, usability, virtual instruments / synthesizing customization, loops, effects, and tools. Its a full featured audio creation suite, that simply doesn't have a worthy Windows counterpart.
You're right, but I would like to point out that there is much better software than GarageBad for both Windows and Mac, it's just not free.

No, I'm saying that the amount of people who need more than VLC (that is, they need to actually edit/record stuff) but who would go for the "shiny"/"easy" thing (Garage Band) instead of the feature-rich thing (Cubase) is pretty small, as well as an area that shouldn't be encouraged.
In my middle school, tons of people would go to the computer lab during lunch to play with GarageBand. The market for the "shiny" and "easy" thing is huge. Why do you think Apple is doing so well with the iPhone, that has worse hardware and less features than it's competitors.

The smartphone segment's size has nothing to do with this. Smartphones are popular because people are willing to trade a certain amount of computing power for higher mobility.

uhh, cool story? lol

When I do this I get a week ban. When they do this they get a warning. Why.

Also, why a mac? Does she plan on doing media stuff on it, such as music/video?

Fun. This community is very pro-PC, so don't be surprised if it kicks off.

The key to learning an operating system is having something to do with it. Don't just use it for the sake of it, find some Mac-only programs you love (most people take to playing with Garageband at first, try that).
I like how you think, but I doubt this guy has any intention to utilize mac-only software like Final Cut Pro or Garageband.

The main reason why the community is pro-pc is because a majority of the mac users here use their Macs as facebook machines.
