Stuff from Blockland 0002:
Early versions of Blockland (never released) had 3d studs sticking up out of the baseplates.
Early in Blockland's history there weren't any mods with support for custom player decals. This didn't stop people from making custom decals. If you made an image and replaced decal.png with it then everyone's decals would change. Some idiot took a screenshot from a game and accidentally named it decal.jpg. This guy hosted a server and people joined it. The game downloaded the decal and replaced their decal with it. Then it would spread to other people when they hosted it. Eventually almost everybody in the game was infected with the "decal virus."
Originally bricks weren't in your inventory. You had to pick them up off the ground like weapons to place them.
Blockland didn't have very many bricks. Many were made and released by a forum member named Chronic in Chronic's Brick Pack (CBP). CBP became a standard component in Blockland Mods (BLM, an early overhaul mod like RTB). RTB and TBM (The Better Mod) also made their own brick packs. AiO (All-in-One, basically a mod of BLM with a million stuffty maps, weapons, and vehicles added) copying TBM's brick pack is what started the whole TBM drama. Oh, and
Chronic was a forum moderator, and unless anything changed, he probably still has moderator privileges on the forums if he logs in.
The shopping cart system for bricks that we use now was first developed in BLM. RTB and TBM stuffed all the bricks into your inventory and you switched them by pressing the number key of the brick type then scrolling until you found the brick you wanted. Back then there was no separate brick inventory, weapon and brick inventories were combined. By default, Blockland only had 5 inventory slots. BLM, AIO, RTB, and TBM bumped it up to 10. There were mods that allowed you to have even more.
RTB and TBM added spam prevention systems. In RTB, you could set the server so that bricks cost money. On joining the server, people would get a certain amount of money. When you ran out you could ask the admin for more money. Originally the GUI didn't check to see if you typed in a number, so you could give players TFU dollars and the chat would say "Admin has given you $TFU." TBM limited it by every once and a while telling you that you've run out of bricks. You would have to go find a brick bucket and take more out.
You used to be able to set the speed of jets. Almost every server would set it to 500 so the feature was removed for retail.
Stuff from the beta:
The default save buildings that are that weird pastel green color were not originally that color. Instead of bold and soft color groups, Blockland had city and girl. The buildings were originally painted green from the city pack. When the color set changed, their colors changed and nobody bothered repainting them. This was before color matching loading or the fill can. If you paint them gray yourself you will see them as they were intended.
Movies can be created using Blockland console commands but cannot be played back (file header missing?)
They are saved in Documents/Blockland/base/recordings.
They're not actually movies. It's a demo feature, and it actually records everything happening in the game and then plays back the game. When demos were in Blockland, you could press tab and switch to first and third person during the movie. I think you could also change the view direction with the mouse but I'm not certain.
