Author Topic: CGI or animatronics? (New Poll)  (Read 3035 times)

I brought up this because i'm having a debate with somebody over facebook in which he thinks CGI is better. In my opinion, CGI is not advanced enough to have whole movies based around it IE: Anaconda. Animatronics are still the better option in my opinion and since we have so much experience with it, it always looks so much better.

i like robots and makeup/costumes in movies more then animated stuff.

no matter how good cgi gets, its still obvious and stuffty.

I totally agree.

you can't have love with cgi

you can have love with robits

robits win

CGI is more than advanced enough. It's not like a video game cutscene, they scan physical models (and sets to use in simulation) into many billion polygon digital copies and use small supercomputer clusters to render scenes with myriad effects and post processing.

Animatronics in comparison looks half stuff.

What are they?
CGI are computer generated images. In a movie like say "Over the Hedge" the entire movie is CGI but in Real life movies they're so obvious and look like stuff. Example : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LMeTTiRz9Ls

Animatronics are stop motion robots that when done right look amazing
They also can be in real time using robotics. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BdjhRZOhdXU

CGI is better
Animatronics looks stuffty and dumb

Avatar was CGI and it looked amazing.

It depends on how each is being used I suppose though.

Please elaborate. How is CGI better?

"Incredibly bad CGI"
No stuff it's going to be bad.

real effects is best effects

It kind of depends, I like CGI for a movie that is mostly CGI like Avatar or something similar, but if they suddenly put it randomly into a movie like Shawshank Redemption or something it would look out of place.

well if its animated movie (avatar counts as animated, the thing is loving 90% cgi) its fine.

but when you have cgi elements in a live action movie, its noticeable and bad. even the new hulk from avengers was obvious and stuffty.

I'm trying to show off CGI with people who don't know how to use it properly. (Which is a lot) That's why people should stick with Animatronics.
